Allow them to share memories or emotions at their own pace, and listen attentively without offering unsolicited advice or minimising their grief. Avoid clichés such as “It was just a pet” or “You can get another one,” as these can be hurtful.
2. Offer Practical Support
Grief can make everyday tasks overwhelming. Offering specific help, like preparing meals, assisting with household chores, or running errands, can alleviate some of their burdens. Even simple gestures, such as bringing over a comforting meal or helping with other pets, can make a
significant difference.
3. Help Preserve Their Pet’s Memory
Encourage your friend to commemorate their pet in a way that feels meaningful to them. This could include creating a photo album, planting a tree in their pet’s memory, or writing a heartfelt letter about their pet's unique qualities and the joy they brought. Sharing your own fond memories of their pet can also provide comfort and reinforce the positive impact their companion had on others.
Remember, grief has no set timeline. Continuing to check in with your friend in the weeks and months following their loss can provide ongoing support and remind them that they are not alone.
